A crochet sweater you made yourself fits differently from anything off the rack. You chose the yarn, you chose the size, and every stitch carries the hours you spent making it. If you have only ever crocheted small things, a crochet sweater sounds like a leap, but a simple bottom-up pullover is really just rectangles sewn together.

Below I am walking you through my free adult crochet sweater pattern: how the pullover is constructed, the five sizes it comes in, the yarn and gauge you need, and how to pick the size that fits you best. At the end, you can grab the full multi-size pattern as a printable PDF.

Why Crochet Your Own Sweater

Store sweaters come in standard sizes that fit almost nobody perfectly. When you crochet your own, you control the bust width, the body length, and the sleeve length, which means the finished crochet sweater actually matches your body. That alone is worth the effort.

Crocheted fabric also has a texture knitting cannot quite match: the stitches are plump, the fabric is warm, and a simple double crochet sweater looks beautifully handmade without looking homemade. It is the kind of garment that gets compliments from people who have no idea what crochet is. If you enjoy making wearables, you will also love our crochet cardigans roundup.

How This Pullover Is Built

This is a classic bottom-up crew neck pullover. The front and back are worked flat in rows of double crochet, the shoulders are seamed, the sides are seamed from the hem up leaving armholes, and the sleeves are worked flat, tapered, then sewn in. There is no tricky yoke shaping and no working in the round until the simple ribbed edgings.

The 5 Sizes

The pattern comes in five adult sizes, from XS/S through 2XL/3XL. The finished bust measurements follow the standard adult range used by major yarn brands: 37 in (94 cm), 40-1/2 in (103 cm), 44-1/2 in (113 cm), 49 in (124.5 cm), and 55 in (140 cm), designed to fit busts of 28-34, 36-38, 40-42, 44-46, and 48-54 in respectively. A similar size range appears in Yarnspirations’ free adult crew neck pullover.

From Panels to Finished Sweater

You start with the back panel: a rectangle of double crochet worked to your size’s stitch count and row count. The front panel matches, with a simple crew neck opening shaped over the last few rows. Then you seam the shoulders, seam the sides leaving the armhole depth open, work each tapered sleeve flat, seam the sleeves, and set them into the armholes.

The finishing is what makes it look store-bought: two rounds of front-post and back-post ribbing around the hem and cuffs, and a neat round of single crochet around the neckline. The whole crochet sweater uses one stitch, double crochet, plus basic seaming.

Yarn, Hook, and Gauge

Use a medium-weight (#4) yarn, acrylic or wool, with a US K-10.5 (6.5 mm) hook. The gauge is 11 double crochet stitches and 7 rows per 4 in (10 cm), the same gauge Heart Hook Home uses for her free adult sweater. Always swatch and match this gauge before you start, because every size in the pattern is calculated from it.

Yardage runs approximately 900 yards (825 m) for XS/S up to 1,650 yards (1,510 m) for 2XL/3XL, so buy all your yarn at once and check the dye lots match. A smooth, light-colored yarn shows off the stitch texture best and makes it easier to see your stitches while you work.

Picking Your Size and Getting the Fit Right

Measure your bust and pick the size whose “to fit” range contains your measurement. Each finished size includes a few inches of positive ease, so the sweater skims rather than clings: the XS/S finishes at 37 in (94 cm) to fit a 28-34 in (71-86.5 cm) bust, for example. If you are between sizes, size down for a closer fit or up for a relaxed one.

Two fit details matter more than anything. First, check your gauge after the first few inches of the back panel; if your panel is wider than the pattern says, your whole crochet sweater will be too big. Second, try the panels against your body before seaming the sides, while adjusting is still easy. Length is simple to customize: add or remove rows evenly before the armhole shaping begins.

Styling Your Handmade Sweater

A handmade pullover in a solid color goes with everything. Wear it over a collared shirt with the collar peeking out, or layer it under our crochet jacket on cold days. A long pendant necklace dresses it up, and rolling the ribbed cuffs once shows off the handmade edging.

For a full handmade outfit, pair it with the classic cozy crochet scarf in a matching or contrasting color. Handmade on handmade always looks intentional.

Approximately 900 yards (825 m) for XS/S, 1,050 for M, 1,200 for L, 1,400 for XL, and 1,650 yards (1,510 m) for 2XL/3XL in medium-weight (#4) yarn.
